What is AI?

The 5-minute origin story. · 5 min read

The simplest definition
AI is software that learns patterns from examples instead of being told every rule. A spam filter that gets smarter the more email it sees is AI. A calculator that just follows formulas isn't.
Why now?
Three things collided: cheap computing power (GPUs), massive datasets (the internet), and better algorithms (transformers). Each was useless without the other two.
Narrow vs general AI
Today's AI is narrow — brilliant at one thing (translating, generating images, playing chess) and clueless at everything else. 'General' AI that can do anything a human can is still science fiction.
